Thank you, Hening. I quickly read through the discussion on Luminous
landscape. Clearly, you understand what I am getting at. Simply setting a
WB based on a gray card departs from what we see as accurate, especially as
the conditions depart significantly from normal, white light at noon. I'm
not looking for perfection, nor do I want to discuss "pleasing color" here.
I'm just trying to get a better understanding how to get "closer" to what I
saw when taking the shot. If a gray card can help, and I think it is a
great starting point, I will use that as my Point of departure. But
accepting a gray card WB on a cloudy day results in overly warm images of
landscapes (compared to what we see). If I choose to change the rendering
for artistic effect, that is a different discussion.
I'd be much more inclined to accept the gray card WB as is on an overcast
day for a portrait, a macro or an isolated subject. That would bring back
the natural warmth of normal daylight, and since our eyes are isolating on
that subject, it would probably appear more natural.
Ben, I read and experimented with your method a few months back and learned
a lot from it. Thank you for that in depth write up. I'll go through it
again. (I'm not sure I want to work THAT hard!). I don't have a fancy
custom camera profiling target, so I used the default camera profile
supplied with RPP.
I appreciate the input.
Lou
