I've wracked my brain over this issue before and came to the conclusion (for me) that white balance and grey cards are for controlled lighting environments where objects (usually products, models) are expected to conform to a standard.
"Natural" lighting is anything but controlled and is therefore subject to interpretation. The example I settled on for my own peace of mind in putting this issue to rest (for me) is trying to use a grey card photographing a sunset.
This is probably way too fuzzy and undisciplined an approach to the topic.
