Thanks for clarifying.
We've got Photoshop previews switched off here because it was implicated in the nasty "could not save because write access was not granted" bug that was killing our production (and deleting our images) a couple of years back.
Just switched it back on as a test and can see that Photoshop is building previews that are too light on this Mac -- just the same as you were getting.
