One should always do this, but that only corrects for imperfections in your lighting setup and peripheral light loss through the lens. It won't do anything for specular highlights if your lens is too wide.
And I can't recommend Robin Myers's EquaLight for the job highly enough. Yes, you can do the same thing in Photoshop, but EquaLight does it better and its batch processing is fantastic.
