Speaking for myself, I won't be "making a living" ten years from now, and I still believe that a fine photograph is every bit as much an image on paper as it used to be, notwithstanding all the other wonderful ways of showing photographs that have mushroomed over the past decade. I think there are huge numbers of people who will continue to want to print photographs, and the several remaining printer manufacturers will service their needs with ink and paper, which is where they make most of their money anyhow; hence they retain an interest in people making prints. It is possible that inkjet printing technology has reached a level of maturity that naturally slows the pace of technological innovation and hence the rate of introduction of new models. I still believe these companies have an interest in keeping their drivers up to date so people will keep on happily printing their photographs. If they aren't, it would be good to learn really why.

After lurking on this list for a while now, it seems that the most common
topics have to do with resolving printing problems. Although it is true that
niche printing markets will exist for long into the future, it is hard to
refute Steven's claim that, broadly speaking, printing is a shrinking
market. I used to be involved in it myself, but for the past decade, I have
deliberately chosen to focus my career on other areas of digital imaging
(there are many!). Every time I read this list, it confirms to me that I've
made the proper choice. I have great respect for those of you having the
specialized skills (and the necessary tenacity) to overcome obstacles to
make outstanding prints, but have you thought about how will you be earning
your living ten years from now?
