Peter,
Selected 11 high white and/or bright inkjet papers. Some with odd spectral
reflectance too, Hahnemühle Baryta FB for example. Different textures and
matte to gloss, OBA content and without.
The V700 here starts clipping paper white above L 95.5 . At L 97.0 about
50% depending on OBA content and texture. Above L 98.5 totally. OBAs have
an influence but the main contribution is whiteness and not brightness.
There are more factors. I added a 5mm stack of white plumbers teflon tape
as the white reference to the samples, Lab 98.9 0.0 0.5 according
SpectrumViz. Clipped too but I used the shadow on the sides for the white
balance.
Vuescan RAW/DNG imported in Photoshop ARC, Raw default, curves
straigthened, all settings on zero. Halve a stop underexposure or using the
recovery slider takes out most of the clipping but it is void detail added.
The total scan area is not equal on exposure too so clipping at left or
right could start earlier or later. RawTherapee and Equalight can improve
the overall area but bring not back detail that is clipped.
I think normal watercolor, drawing, acryl papers do not have a white
reflectance that high as the papers I selected here. The usual photo
prints neither and they have some gloss too.
Have still to do the HP G4010 and the Epson 3200 scans. Could put some
images of the clipping on my site leter on.
