I believe Paul mentioned that he cannot use the scanner he has and doesn't want to buy another one, so the scanner colour space doesn't seem relevant in this context. Scanner colour spaces are usually much wider than sRGB, which latter is embedded in the scans he already made and is considering to remake using a camera this time, if I understand the context correctly. What he could do is make a sample camera capture of one of his Velvia photos carefully selected for the purpose. open in Photoshop in ProPhoto RGB and analyse it compared with his previous scan of the same photo. That should answer whether the film gamut is the binding constraint or whether he'll capture a wider colour palette redoing these scans with a camera.

You'll want to compare the scanner profile to those and probably just work with high bit RGB in the scanner color space anyway. You don't have to convert to either.
