I walked the walk of Pain along with you. My 4900 delivered excellent prints
but was ridiculous with its lack of reliability. I suffered through a variety
of measures and pure waste of time simply getting the thing to print well when
going unused for periods of time. Epson never came clean with the market
regarding their faux pas with this model because they didn’t have to….limited
competition and a shrinking market will do that.
I held my nose after consigning my 4900 to the trash bin and purchased a P800
over 18 months ago. Very pleased with the usability and print quality. I had
considered a newer Canon after having a great run with a Canon IPF5100 a
generation ago but decided against it primarily due third party software
support. I started using Imageprint several years ago and came to appreciate
it for better print quality and color management predictability given
Apple/Epson/Adobe constantly messing with subtle changes that disrupt color
management.
Today, I am very pleased with the P800/Imageprint combination. The prints are
equal to my 4900 prints (which as a concern given the ink channel differences
between the two models) and the reliability and ease is much higher.
I hope this helps someone coping with Epson 4900 “issues”…

George Pappas
