- Thread-topic: Tools for managing MacOS user display settings
Hi Color Sync Users
This is about display color management in multi-user educational Mac labs.
This is not an easy task.
We run three colour managed labs in our photography department at our
university.
Students will change the brightness of their displays. And move them out of
their calibrated setting.
And without intervention, all subsequent users of that computer will inherit
their choice for the display brightness.
And not only that, the default setting for a new user account is for the
display is to automatically adjust brightness using the ambient light level.
When you running a color managed at the ISO recommend brightness of 32 lux,
that makes for a very a dim display. And new users of a machine will not by
default inherit the custom ICC display profile we build.
We manage all this nonsense with log in scripts. That touch and set user
setting in the display panel in System Preferences. Tools that load a selected
display profile. Scripts that reset the display brightness to the level
recorded at the time the custom profile was built. Scripts that then watch the
display brightness setting.
There are no Apple tools to manage these sorts of things. So our Mac IT
specialist uses modified tools from Git Hub projects to do this. Like Joey
Korkames ddcctl project we use for managing Mac display panel and brightness
settings.
And Tim Sutton has made a tool for selecting the custom display profiles. Plus
there are other custom tools our Mac specialist built himself.
We would both prefer if there were proper Apple MDM tools / Apple support for
managing this sort of user display setting related stuff. As the Mac OS matures
it becomes ever more secure, as it should. But then these back-door style tools
keep breaking with OS updates. And we have to test and often re-engineer the
tools every OS upgrade.
This year the tool that turns off the user setting to automatically adjust the
display brightness stopped working. If we can’t get it working before the
students get back, we won’t be able to colour manage their labs. That’s a big
deal for us.
REQUEST
If anyone on Apples ColorSync team is reading this, can you please go in to bat
on our behalf and ask that Apple create some proper MDM tools (or something of
the sorts) for businesses like ours that need to manage their users display
settings.
And if other list member who manage colour managed labs in an educational
environments want to chip in with their experience I’d love to hear that too.
Thanks
Peter Miles
