Audio Input AudioUnit?

Is there a reason that there is no AudioUnit defined to represent audio input from an audio device (namely the default audio input port)? Is there a reason why I shouldn't create my own? Has anyone already done this? The examples I've found seem to suggest that the audio sources in an AUGraph are usually a synth or some other generative AudioUnit, but what about audio-in?
