There are APIs in X - MusicSequence/MusicPlayer that allow you to read a
midi file in and play it - it gives you the ability to direct the output to
either a graph (with any number and kinds of nodes in it), with event types
that extend beyond MIDI events, as well as to external MIDI devices.
As you're doing this programmatically this is a better choice I think.
QT - MIDI output is not working at this point in X.
