I got a private response to this that made me realize I should have
answered more seriously and without the assumption that everyone know
that the Apple engineers most active on this list work on the OS and
not hardware.
That other hardware does not exhibit this problem does suggest that it
may not be a software problem.
It happens that I bought and use regularly one of Griffin's "optimized
for audio" hubs since it didn't cost (much?) more than the ones next to
it in the Apple Store.

Well, they're asserting that it's a hardware problem ... and while
this joke is a gross exaggeration, it's funny because it contains a
kernel of truth: How many programmers does it take to change a
lightbulb? None, it's a hardware problem.
