Could the mouse events be translated into some other kind of message?

I second this. As I said before, this rather strange, and confusing, to give that name to a thing that might obviously not be related to a real mouse event. Those automation sent to the host could comes from other ways, and a plugin should be able to spontaneously send an automation record to the host without any mouse event implied.

But, to my opinion, this is only a problem of naming (that perhaps why I did not find what I wanted about automation record in the AU documentation)

About time stamping, what if a 'MouseUpInControl' is immediately followed by a 'MouseDownInControl' ? (in that order). Are they merged if applied to the same parameter, or not ? How is it internally handled, since the clock might not be as fine grained as the precedence call ?

Thanks,

Raphael
