The deal is that Logic has several automation modes, one of which is
called "touch" (as Niko mentioned), and touch mode works exactly as you
describe, where all old automation is preserved and followed until you
"touch" a parameter (i.e. mouse click), then automation gets recorded,
then old automation data returns as soon as you stop "touching" (relax
mouse). Logic is not the only app that offers an automation mode like
this, I think that Pro Tools and maybe other apps do, too.
VST (later revisions, I think starting with 2.2) added methods called
beginEdit and endEdit which basically were these same kinds of
notifications. So perhaps more generic names for the notifiers, rather
than using the mouse lingo, would be better?
Finally what is funny is that Protools (RTAS) and Digital
Performer (MAS), have already the same automation handling, ie
support for touch, latch, and overwrite. In the two cases
mechanism is the same :
- you say to the host : I want to override the value
- you change the value
- you say to the host : I want to release my override
As pointed out by those two norms, this has nothing to do with
mouse. So generic names would be better in my opinion.
Thanks,
Raphael
