CoreAudio capabilities

Would somebody be willing to comment on the capabilities of CoreAudio?

Here is the context of the question:

I have purchased a M-Audio USB Quattro audio interface. The device has four input+four output
channels and 24-bits per sample.

Using the latest CoreAudio driver from m-audio.com, I have not been able to do better than 16-bits
and address two input and two output channels. There are at least three explanations:

i) a problem with my software;
ii) a problem with m-audio's drivers;
iii) a limitation of CoreAudio.

I have only been using the CoreAudio API for a short time, so I acknowledge that this is a newbie question.
Nonetheless, thanks for your help,

Carrick Talmadge
