Kurt,
[ I do not have a >2 channel device that works on OS X yet, and not
[ understanding this issue affects my potential decision to buy one.
As long as you have a driver (either the built-in support for USB-Audio, or a
device-specific driver), you should not hold back buying a multi-channel
device. It might be tricky determining which devices out there genuinely
support USB-Audio, but devices like the eMagic EMI 2|6 which have a specific
driver available from the vendor are a sure bet. Go for it!
[ Does the Daisy workaround enable apps that use the default audio
[ unit for output to see more than 2 channels?
Yes, my app is painfully simple. It opens the default audio output unit and
merely pays attention to the parameters passed in the callback. So long as the
application is prepared to provide more than 2 channels, it will work when you
use Daisy to select and configure a multi-channel device.
[ Do apps that use the HAL directly not need the workaround or does
[ the problem still apply for them?
Apps are free to do exactly what Daisy does. In fact, that's the whole reason
that the Daisy source code is provided - so developers can see how to
configure everything under user control. It might eventually become redundant
if the System Preferences finally provide access to everything, but then again,
your application may not want to use the default device. Good UI design would
place the HAL controls in a dialog that is out of the way for users who are
satisfied with the default settings.
BTW, when I said "workaround" I meant that Daisy is a workaround for the
missing features in System Preferences. There aren't any problems in CoreAudio
or the HAL that require Daisy to fix (so far as I know).
P.S. If you're not a developer, you might find that it is a bit early to jump
into audio on Mac OS X, especially if you need advanced surround sound. But
if you are a developer, I don't see any reason to hold back on purchasing audio
hardware unless your favorite device is not USB-Audio and the manufacturer has
yet to provide a CoreAudio driver.
