I remember coming across a (I think) French group that was working on something like this for FreeMIDI (again, I think) a couple years ago. I do remember for a fact that you could connect machines via Ethernet and send MIDI data between. Of course, no Rendezvous, though.

Is was maybe the work on real-time transmission of MIDI events that is done as part of the MidiShare project.

The MidiShare MacOSX version is distributed with 2 drivers that allows transmisson of Midi events over a network:
- msLanDriver : the driver for local transmission on Ethernet network
- msWanDriver : the driver for transmission over Internet.

These "drivers" are distributed in the user kit available here:
