Thanks to Robert Grant for kindly mentioning mLan.
Hadn't looked at mLan recently. Did some light Google searching, and mLan
still seems pitched as a "standard easy" way to interconnect expensive
audio/midi hardware to a computer.
Didn't find much hype about the possible alternative use-- mLan as a
"standard easy" way to interconnect inexpensive computers with a minimum
amount of expensive audio/midi hardware. The "master sequencer" computer
seems the only one that really needs nice audio/midi interfaces (GRIN).
In addition to the Apple OSX mLan driver, Yamaha has written MacOS 9 and XP
mLan drivers, but didn't find Yamaha web site driver download links except
for specialized software for their mLan hardware products.
The PreSonus web site has what looks like downloads of Yamaha MacOS 9 and XP
drivers. It might not be a "nice thing" to "rip off" the Yamaha drivers just
for audio/midi computer networking. There may be license restrictions about
using the drivers "standalone". Dunno.
If mLan is actually practical for computer-to-computer realtime use, and I
decided to use it, would feel better buying the drivers unless the drivers
are specifically licensed for general distribution.
I'm too busy to try it right now, but perhaps one could interconnect
computers sans mLan hardware, using the Yamaha or Apple OSX drivers?
