But there is a connection layer that is "mLan" that is not
available (at least not yet) to the public. There are components of the
connection layer that are patented.

ARRRGH!!
I know I'm preaching to the choir here (well, I think I am, anyway),
but I'd still like to state the following opinion: if MIDI had been
handled in the same way, it would have died at birth.
I don't understand this kind of behavior. I really, really don't. It
doesn't make good sense from anybody's perspective: not the customer's,
not the company's, not the industry's. A long time ago, maybe you could
say that the open-standards approach was untried and too risky. Since
MIDI, the only reason anybody in this business could reasonably give
for holding something back, as Yamaha is doing with mLAN, is that they
want it to fail. And if Yamaha wants mLAN to succeed - well, they're
either crazy or just plain stupid.
Maybe I've finally snapped, but I'm really sick of this crap. We can't
get drivers, we can barely get devices, and all this for a physical and
networking layer with many years of proof and debugging behind it!
We need to get off our duffs and stop waiting for Yamaha to quit
stringing us along. Maybe we need a bit of insurrection - a new
standard, developed on-line, like PNG. There is some truly phenomenal
talent on this list alone - and how hard can this connection-making
stuff really be? And if there are patents, I'm quite sure they can be
avoided. Patents, indeed! (Lovely, isn't it, how the wonderful patent
system protects the small inventor - and lines the pockets of
brain-dead institutions!)
Just remember: if we don't get FireWire going for pro audio, USB will
take over the world.* And _we don't want that_. (Well, at least I
don't.)
OK, I feel much better now. Back to work :)
cheers -- MPA
* Note that all of the USB standards are downloadable _gratis_ from
usb.org. Hey, Yamaha - does that tell you something? (Apple: all is
forgiven, you're off the hook. You've learned this particular lesson
well, as evidenced by Rendezvous.)
