The good thing about mLAN is that it isn't completely proprietary,
despite what Yamaha wants you to think (darn that Japanese habit of
keeping everything a big secret!). It's kind of a bundle of existing
standards - especially the Audio and Music Protocol, which you can
download from the MMA's web site.
Yamaha developed it and put it in the public domain. I believe the
latest version of it is on the
http://www.1394ta.org web site. At
any rate, it's someplace where you can download it or buy. And it
does depend on a bunch of other low level IEC standards (61883-6)...
The proprietary part of mLAN, about which I have been able to learn
very little, seems to revolve around a setup protocol which is,
among other things, used to assign resources to FireWire isochronous
channels. I have a theory, as yet untested, that you can still talk
to mLAN devices even if you don't talk this protocol.
Of course, the best thing about mLAN is that it's a standard
protocol for everybody to agree on, like MIDI; and this means you
only need to make one driver for it, and then if your driver works,
you can talk to everybody else. Now, why Yamaha didn't publish this
like MIDI, and let everybody use it without hassle, remains one of
life's great unanswered questions ...
They did. The catch is that the number of standards you have to wade
through (and hence the requisite software stack) is huge and they
aren't even all available from the same place.... And you have to
pay around $150 each for copies on at least some of them (no
downloads).
