There is a wealth of useful information on the CoreAudio Swiki site. Example code, tips, and two Guidelines sections that are being put together for writing Audio Units and AU hosts.

Hi everybody!

I've been programming PortAudio for some time now and I'm slowly starting to get the pieces right. I'm attending classes in C++ and audio programming but these are held on Windows machines. My goal has all along been to learn CoreAudio and to write AudioUnits. However, my knowledge isn't that deep yet and I find most of the Apple documentation quite intimidating. I've downloaded almost every pdf on audio programming I could find from Apples ADC-site, but most of them stated that I have to know Kernel programming or very sophisticated hardware programming. I gave up almost immediately, even though I'm still eager to learn these API's.

Is it that hard? Do I have to know kernel programming to write a simple tone generator with CoreAudio? Hopefully (and probably) I'm wrong, but I do need a punch in the right direction here. Which pdf should I start with? What prior knowledge is required? I consider myself a decent C, C++ and Obj-C programmer, but this is the first time I've used an API for the Mac (except the Cocoa frameworks of course).

Please help me getting started. Off course I could keep on using PortAudio, it's working great for me, but as a qualified Mac geek I would like to unleash the power of Mac OS X Audio...

Best regards

/Jont Olof
