Thank you all!
I found some interesting documentation in the CoreAudio folder in my
developers folder (after installing the CoreAudio.sdk) which discusses
Audio Units. I always thought of Audio Units as plug-ins and only
plug-ins (like VST). Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I'm
concerned after reading the first few pages I get the impression that
Audio Unit is the collective name for virtually anything that is
producing, managing or manipulating audio under OS X. If I for instance
look at the SineGenerator that John of Griffintech sent me, is that to
be considered an audio unit?
The nomenclature seems to be the first, rather difficult problem to
overcome. What is an Audio Device for example? And what is an Audio
Device Driver? As an audio engineer I'd say that it's the
driver for an audio interface like the M-box or Motu 896. As a
programmer apprentice I don't have a clue. Some of the documentation
I've read has confused me more than enough and I'm just trying to get
these things straight first...
I think what I'd like is some sort of comprehensive "jargon dictionary"
(especially as I am a swede and there is no swedish literature on the
subject whatsoever). Or at least some explanation for the most
frequently used audio programming terms of Core Audio and Audio Units.
If you feel you know some terms that might be useful to explain for a
Newbie like me, please do...
Best regards
Jont Olof
