There are other ways to save space.
A method which I'm partial to, since its both spaceconsuming and logical,
is used in Photoshop 7: the control consists of a textbox with a numerical
value (say, '100%'), and when you click it with your mouse, a small slider
pops up beneath the mousecursor, where the cursor points to the position of
the current value on the slider.
Click the slider to activate it (this is, by the way, something I don't
like; I would find it more logical to just click the textbox and start
moving the mouse to change the value). You can change the value by moving
the mouse sideways, and releasing the button closes the slider popup (so
you'll only see the textbox again).
