[Newbie] simple example of capturing standard microphone input

Hello Sound Gurus,

Forgive me, but I have searched and not found an example of capturing sound from the
microphone other than Daisy, which seems a bit daunting trying to narrow down what I need.
I am looking just to capture the stream from the mic to process with an external application.
Does anyone know of any fairly simple examples of sound capture, or must I tough it out and
figure out what I need to strip from Daisy?

I have a couple of years experience with C and about a year with Cocoa on the hobbyist level,
I have not worked sound before so any pointers towards wrapping my head around sound in general
would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks!
Larry
