Yup, I see now: you're talking about handling FXB/FXP files, and I was
talking about handling the VST settings stored as state data within a host
song/document file.

But now that I think about what you're saying more, I think that this is
an ideal opportunity for a 3rd party presets conversion app, but perhaps a
bit too hacky to add as a part of the actual AU API... Don't get me
wrong, I definitely agree that it's an issue to deal with, but how you
describe it, I imagine a little utility app being the perfect solution,
not necessarily something added to the API and something that AU host apps
are expected to be able to do in a uniform way. Just my opinion on it...
