What's the confusion? I'm not saying what I'm proposing is the perfect solution but
one where the pros outweigh the cons. I'm not going to say that Option 3 is without
cons which is why I can be sympathetic.

Oh... sorry. I didn't understand 'sympathy' in this context.

I agree with the need for banks which was one of the neat things about the preferences
file, it's kind of a built in bank.

Yes.. but that's *not* the same as saying the user can create a bank anywhere he likes.

A few hundred MB sysex dump of a single preset? Or is that a bank + a ton of samples?

Well, archives from years and years of programming synths... I was trying to illustrate that for many people, patches are just as important as any Word document in terms of the effort that goes into creating them... I certainly don't think of them as Word macros or Mail rules, that's all.

Hell, I just looked... I still have hundreds of old 'patch sheets' from old analogs. They 'really' look like documents, being on paper and all... oh and here are session folders with every setting of every effect, eq, etc. painstakingly written down... they're not written on Post-it notes, so I'm guessing they're documents. Dunno, though. Maybe they're shopping lists?

If everyone is happy having preset/bank management foisted upon them by the standard, then I guess the argument is moot.
Well I think you're proposing a standard bank scheme which would call for some
standard bank management wouldn't it? Like adding/removing presets in a bank?

Well, I'm all for having a standardized file format. We already have that (banks are simply a matter of agreeing on another key, no?). I'm opposed to:
a) hiding presets/banks from the user in an opaque Preferences file
b) enforcing a location for presets/banks

In any case, it's certainly a matter of opinion, and I'm just trying to express mine (though I'm right in this case)... I thought my point of view was horribly underrepresented in your overview. :) Thanks for listening.

I wouldn't know. I don't even have a .mac e-mail address.
Whatever.

Heh... Guess my sense of humor isn't for everyone... what I was trying to say is that I'm definitely not an expert on all things Mac, sorry if you took it the wrong way, I certainly didn't mean any offense.

Best,

Art
