Well, I'm all for having a standardized file format. We already have that (banks are simply a matter of agreeing on another key, no?). I'm opposed to:
a) hiding presets/banks from the user in an opaque Preferences file
b) enforcing a location for presets/banks

In any case, it's certainly a matter of opinion, and I'm just trying to express mine (though I'm right in this case)... I thought my point of view was horribly underrepresented in your overview. :) Thanks for listening.

*If* we can reliably present an open dialog that only enables preset files that are
compatible with the selected AU I would be happy to let the user put them wherever
they want, because they would then be able to spot the ones that are compatible. If hosts
want to build popup menus/hierarchical menus or whatever they can do that still by
groveling through directories looking for compatible presets in the same way the
open dialog does.

All this foo-fah is about making it easy for users and host developers to
do the right thing.

So I guess this would be Option 0b. Present a smart open dialog that only shows the
applicable presets in the current folder - others are greyed out.

I would like to prove that this *is* possible before surrendering though.

I wouldn't know. I don't even have a .mac e-mail address.
Whatever.

Heh... Guess my sense of humor isn't for everyone... what I was trying to say is that I'm definitely not an expert on all things Mac, sorry if you took it the wrong way, I certainly didn't mean any offense.

Sorry, it's hard to detect tone sometimes. :-) And I'm no Mac style guru either - see how
Marc went ballistic with my IE analogy :-)
