External MIDI devices are not currently supported through the QuickTime API on OS X.

Chris,

Thanks for responding. Yes, I know about the sound fonts, but I am trying to drive a Midi-controlled Disklavier grand piano. So the sound fonts won't do the trick. How does one get external hardware Midi devices to show up in the list?

You can put DLS and SoundFont sound banks in:

~/Audio/Sounds/Banks

They should then should up in the QuickTime Music preferences where you
can select the default bank used for QuickTime Music playback.

When using the DLSMusicDevice AudioUnit directly, it's possible to
programmatically set the sample bank with an AudioUnitSetProperty()
call...

Hello,

I am new to this list. I have a question specifying an external
synthesizer in OS X 10.2.1. According to the Quicktime help, you
are supposed to be able to specify an external synthesizer in the
Quicktime Music Preferences. When I select the music preferences,
the only synthesizer in the list is the Quicktime Music Synthesizer.
How do you get an external synthesizer in the list so it can be
selected. This worked under OS 9, but does not work in OS X 10.2.1.

Thanks for any help.
