I'd disagree with the below, since we are attempting to give advice to Apple
here - 12/8, 6/8, and 9/8 are normally found as "compound" meters in which
the beat is counted by the dotted quarter. 12/8 thus has four beats per
measure, each one the time of a dotted quarter. This complicates somewhat
the matter of reporting beats - depending on the purpose of knowing what the
"beat" is. For a metronome track you'd need to use the dotted values.
It's true that to relate to quarter notes regardless of meter makes no
sense. It would be better to have an explicit indication of the performed
beats per measure, the note value of each beat, and the time of that value,
independent of the conventions of traditional meter signatures.
