A couple of months ago I had a similar question. The conclusion was that
short of writing your own (pseudo) audio device driver (one that mimicks
actual hardware), there wasn't any other way.

I'm not sure if this has changed since the advent of Jaguar, although I
haven't come across features that might suggest otherwise.
