Thanks for the reply. I can see that it is standard convention, at least with VST, to have a supplied user interface. I can see the benefits in it when standard controls aren't good enough. But those interested in interface consistency will not want to subject their users to whatever may pop up (however good it may be).

That would certainly be preferred

Some AU in particular will be extremely difficult to use with any kind of
standard interface... However, this cannot be relied upon and some host apps
will prefer (for whatever reason) to only present a UI that they design...
