The right thing to do is to change the format of your device and use the appropriate notification mechanisms in the IOAudio family to tell the HAL about it.

Is there a standard method for notifying users of a sample rate mismatch in a core audio driver?

I have a driver for a S/PDIF PCI device. Users can mistakenly plug a cable with a rate that is different than the nominal one (the one in the application).
