Heh.. I've had too many problems with MacsBug not recognizing the
USB-keyboard and USB-mouse, but also when working with synthersizers,
you might get quantizing problems and the like. Imagine that while
you're listening to your 192kHz music, which is 24-bit 5.1 channels,
your computer starts reading data from your USB-harddisk, and chop-chop,
there goes the sound...
(Remember.. One can't do 100 things.. Eh, should I say 127 things.. at
the same time. ;))
You have to remember that USB devices indicate their bandwidth
requirements at enumeration. When playback starts, the device requests
that bandwidth; if not enough bandwidth is available at that time, then
the playback doesn't start. Likewise, if you're playing back from a USB
hard disk, that too will request bandwidth and get it all or nothing.
So if you're trying to play back from your USB hard disk, and the
combined bandwidth requirements exceed what's available, the playback
probably won't even start. The clever solution, of course, is to not
connect your USB hard drive and your USB audio device to the same root
hub :)
