You can play back DVD-A on a Mac (obviously you can playback a DVD movie
which is DVD-V).
I did recently listen to a 5.1 96k 24bit on the Mac.
To be clear about this, the disc had no DVD-V section on it, as some discs
do and thus you might in fact be listening to lower sample rate DVD-V. The
disc only had 44.1 16bit stereo, 96 24bit stereo and 96 24bit surround
(which I was listening to).
One thing that confused me is that I could set playback in the AudioMidi
Setup utility to any rate, so that includes 44.1,48,88.2,96,176.4,192k. Just
for fun I tried them all and it worked for all, which makes me assume there
is a software SRC engaged somewhere obviously. The thing that scares me
about that is, I have no clue whether the data is passed unchanged to my DAC
when it is set to the correct rate being 96k.
I can see the convenience of this sort of goof-proof ness but on the other
hand it's also slightly worrisome I guess for more audiophile interested
folks.
I wouldn't hold my breath to see SACD playback on a Mac anytime soon (well
unless some new superdrive comes out, but I don't even see that happening).
SACD has multiple methods of copy protecting the discs one of them is
modulation of not only a pit-or no pit on the disc in a matter of speaking
but also the width of the pits, in other words the drive physically needs to
be capable of detecting these in order for an SACD disc to play back
properly.
The people behind SACD obviously do not want devices capable of this to show
up in computers, let alone burners with this type of capabilities.
(I won't even bother suggesting our 192k solutions as they are in price
ranges higher than the companies you mentioned).
Cheers, Kevin

Hi Jens,
Not that it should matter to me, but what need do you have that
requires 192khz playback capability? Can you play DVD audio on a mac?
I'd prefer to see SACD support on the Mac before DVD audio, in any
case.
I too am suspect of USB, but that's probably from the old USB days.
I've never had any problems running audio over it, granted I don't use
over 44.1khz audio.
MOTU has a few firewire devices (www.motu.org), though they are
probably more than you're looking for. Also the Quata-fire device at
www.audiomidi.com might be ok for you, but not sure if it does
playback. You could probably find many things with a google search.
