Hi Kevin,
One thing that confused me is that I could set playback in the
AudioMidi
Setup utility to any rate, so that includes
44.1,48,88.2,96,176.4,192k. Just
for fun I tried them all and it worked for all, which makes me assume
there
is a software SRC engaged somewhere obviously. The thing that scares me
about that is, I have no clue whether the data is passed unchanged to
my DAC
when it is set to the correct rate being 96k.
I can see the convenience of this sort of goof-proof ness but on the
other
hand it's also slightly worrisome I guess for more audiophile
interested
folks.
This isn't the case: Audio MIDI Setup validates sample rates when you
press enter after typing in a sample rate (on Panther.) If your device
is running at 44100Hz, and you type in 50632.1Hz, it will snap back to
44100Hz when you press enter. This is the device's sample rate.
There's no software SRC happening.
I notice, however, that pressing tab to move out of the sample ratetext
field leaves the rate unchanged, so it looks like AMS is operating at
that sample rate. It isn't changing in that case, though clearly the
UI is confusing. I've filed a but so that we'll fix this in AMS.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Cheers,
Luke
