Are there any plans to add this functionality to AudioUnits?

If not, would it be possible to achieve the result by implementing host-specific callbacks?
I would prefer to use AudioUnits rather than rolling my own plug-in mechanism, albeit through host-specific callbacks that would only make them usable from within hosts that implement the same set of callbacks.
