hi rudy.
i'm not sure i know what you're asking exactly.
MTCoreAudio doesn't expose any of the HAL calls for changing
what would be the default input, output, or system output
devices (i felt those should only be changed from the the
preference panel). however, if you wanted to change the
default input or output device, you could just use the plain
C HAL calls, and use [aDevice deviceID] to get the device
ID you'd use.
if you mean just being able to set any parameter on such a device,
then i've had no problems with the several griffin iMics i have
connected (simultaneously) to my computer. each iMic appears
as two audio devices, neither of which have sources, and each
of which has exactly one stream (either in the input or output
direction). last time i checked, their streams were not named.
i'm sorry if i've completely misunderstood your question.

has anyone had any success in using MTCoreAudio to set what would be
returned as the defaultInputDevice/defaultOuputDevice/
defaultSystemOutputDevice for devices that don't advertise any
'sources'(but do advertise streams, and yet don't give them names?)?
