I guess typical midi equipment nowadays has an IN/THRU/OUT arrangement (if
even that), and that THRU is just IN repeated. In that case you can only
chain your outputs, as you described. But some equipment merges its input
with internally generated events and sends both to the output. In this case
you can create a chain destined for the input of a midi interface - and in
this case you can not create the output chain you are describing.
For example my VOCE midi drawbars have what they label a MERGE/OUT
configuration, where MERGE is an input that gets merged to the output.
Also, there are inexpensive merge boxes. These are perhaps no more cost
effective than having more inputs on your interface. But they can be
convenient in some cases to simplify cabling, or just preferable to buying
another interface when you run out of inputs, although there is perhaps a
disadvantage in terms of throughput.
