Does the same thing happen in AMS when the user clicks "Rescan MIDI"?
It simply calls MIDIRestart(). I suspect the same thing would happen
there too.

I do not know. I will check. I have 2 people reporting this problem.
One, James Chandler (also on this list), is having it happen with OSX
10.2.6, 15" Powerbook G4, MIDIMan 1X1 MidiSport, latest MIDIMan OSX
drivers.
In case it would help to put details on this list, I tried what Doug
suggested.
In AMS, clicking "Rescan MIDI" does not generate any error dialogs, but
it does cause the MIDISport 1X1 Icon to become dimmed. "Show Device
Info" on the MIDISport Icon, the info dialog says, "Device is Offline".
If I quit AMS and then re-launch AMS, the MIDISport 1X1 Icon is
not-dimmed, and "Show Device Info" lists the interface as "Device is
Online".
Haven't extensively tested the MIDISport on the Powerbook, but it
worked fine on another downloaded OSX sequencer demo. Perhaps this
other sequencer demo doesn't call MIDI Reset. Unfortunately, I don't
recall the name of the working demo. The demo was pretty crude, so I
trashed it after verifying that the MIDI interface was working.
