You're right, of course. We're all here because we agree with that.
However, take this as sincere input from one (but I believe
representative), plugin developer: please show a little more
acknowledgement of the practical issues of the real world.
Most notably, I believe it is a bad idea to not take responsibility
for VST2AU. To many of us, that is an integral part of
the AU platform, and an essential intermediate step towards
migrating plugin designs toward that ideal we all desire.
By letting it wither, I believe you've simply pushed the
hacks, ill-specified behavior, and work-arounds from one
part of the platform to another. I've spent the better part
of the last week sorting out AU host vagaries due to
problems in VST2AU.
I honestly believe the single best thing you could do to
make AU a more attractive platform is to offer a migration
path to it, i.e. support VST2AU.

Hey, I realize the world doesn't always match our perfect ideal.
But, look, we're trying to create a standard here which avoids the kind
of hacks, ill-specified behavior, and work-arounds to support specific hosts that have plagued other plug-in formats in the past. Sometimes the hosts or AudioUnits
haven't yet caught up to our ideal, but we're still looking to the future
and trying to encourage host developers and AudioUnit developers to
agree on a standard way of doing things (with much help from people
on this mailing list). The last thing we need is to
have all kinds of special case code floating around to work-around this
or that limitation or bug of some specific host or AudioUnit. I thought
we all understood that.
