OK - this sounds like the best way to go. I'll put in custom properties
for handling the instruments and export no instruments or factory
presets.

I have checked out inputs in a Zoyd build within Logic. Looked like it
worked...
And if I had votes to catch, I'd go for a universal approach. Any
behaviour should be available anywhere, and it could be sorted out via
Properties...
