Solutions for distributed file system problems are abundant.
The key missing ingredient is a component/property API which
works across processes/hosts (and a marshalling scheme to go with
it). Does anyone know if it has support for calls between processes?
Or, must the caller and callee for set and get property calls
be in the same process?

I think the only way we are going to answer these questions is to lay down the challenge of achieving such a goal!
