In Carbon, custom controls must reside in project source code, which
has advantages and disadvantages. Maybe Carbon custom controls are
too much a PITA in practice, dunno yet. A composite Knob-and-Textbox
custom control shouldn't have cyclic message problems, since all the
elements would just look like a single slider control to the OS?
Based on my experience working with the AUGUIFramework (and I think
Airy will concur), writing custom Carbon controls using Apple's
HIFramework is very easy and well worth the effort to do it the right
way.

I concur.
Especially now that the things to make the handling of non-compositing
windows mostly automatic for the developper are written ;-)
But, yes, writing TView is really easy, and you have quite a few Knob,
Meters, Buttons, PopUp, Pictures, TextField, Pane... sample codes now
to start with...
