CoreMIDI establishes a file format for the definition of programs within a
synthesizer, the .mid file. But, to date, I (and many others) have been
unable to get the exact details of the XML format used to describe
patchlists.
Where is it? (the spec I mean.)
I've heard vicious rumors that Apple is purposefully squelching
dissemination of the format's details for reasons I cannot fathom so I
figured that I'd better ask here where there is some official Apple
representation.
The reason we (programmers on the motu-mac list) need the file format
details is that we are interested in "rolling our own" .mid definition files
such that a particular synth's patches are arranged by group (basses, pads,
etc.) instead of the way that all bundled .mid files (notably those from
Digital Performer) are arranged: by synthesizer bank.
Reverse engineering of the XML file format currently leaves us with the
question as to whether the .mid format can handle this kind of grouping at
all.
Could somebody please chime in here and answer once and for all:
* Is the XML specification for the .mid file format publicly available?
* If yes, where?
* If no, why not?
Thanks!
