Long interesting stuff [snipped]...
Our knobs use a linear motion that is hOffset-vOffset. So up and/or right
turns the knob clockwise; down and/or right turns the knob
counter-clockwise. This seems to work out pretty well since almost anything
you do (except strict rotational motion) works as you might expect.
BTW, IMHO, the point of the knobs on the screen is *not* to simulate
physical knobs that cannot be controlled physically. It is for the same
reason knobs are used on audio gear instead of strictly faders (conservation
of space with the ability to get a sense of the control value with a
glance). For this reason, the linear relative control motion makes a lot of
sense -- the control works like a slider (which is what you would use if you
had infinite space), but fits in a much smaller package. The gesture of
clicking on the knob sets the "adjust" mode that allows you to use more
physical space than the on-screen representation. The relative mode makes
sense because the knobs are generally small targets and the absolute
positioning accuracy is low for a small target. OTOH, if you are using the
large photorealistic knobs, the positioning accuracy is OK, but if you are
going to use all that space, why not use sliders (except for the "cool"
factor which is more about marketing than [functional] UI design).
