Make 3D models of a group of knobs, buttons, LED's, whatever. Set the
lighting and camera angle, and "take pictures" of the controls in

"rather automatically" once the model is constructed.
Another nice 3D-Tool would be POV-ray, an open source rendering
application. IIRC it has to be controlled from special text files, so
it's a wonderful thing for programmers who don't like those fancy
3D-software guis.
In addition, for those infamous stacked image bitmaps (required for
VSTGUI etc.), Adobe After Effects is a wondeful tool. If you render
your 3d stuff with transparency + for the shadow on the ground use a
white plane with only the shadow of your object, you can composite your
knob (or anything) upon any background you have. - Well, in fact it's a
wonderful layout tool, too. - If you have nested compositions for all
your widgets, you can place them anywhere and anytimes on your
background and still watch animation at different times (like
previewing the motion of widgets).
Only thing: It's a much, much too oversized software when using just
for this task.
Has anyone used FilmGimp? - It should be the lowcost version of After
Effects... dunno if/how it runs on OS X...
If you just need stacked images from a couple of single frames, this
one is nice:

(that site has even more free and useful tools...)
