The Emagic EMI 2|6 has offered Hardware Direct Monitoring since before Jaguar.
As a USB audio device, the input and output sections appear as separate
devices. However, the input has a Mute control and separate Volume controls
for each channel. Engaging the Mute turns off the HDM. Changing the Volume
determines how loud the input appears mixed into the output (channels 1 and 2
of the 6 total). This affects both analog and digital input, allowing direct
monitoring of whichever input is active (shown by the LED on the box).
NOTE: Recording from the input is unaffected by Mute or Volume. Apparently,
there is not analog gain stage ahead of the 24-bit A/D, and there is no option
to apply digital gain when recording from a digital source. So the EMI does
what I think is most useful, but it makes we wonder whether there is a standard
in CoreAudio stating whether Mute and Volume on an input device should affect
the record level or the (direct) monitoring level.

The Question:
When can we expect to see a Core Audio implementation
of VST-style Hardware Direct Monitoring (IE, a
simulation of the way tape machines provide
zero-latency monitoring of tracks for overdubbing)?
I'm a musician currently stuck using Nuendo w/ OS9
because of the lack of DM in Core Audio.
Thanks,
