Or, how about setNumInputs() and setNumOutputs()? :-)

Seriously, Bill was taking a survey to try to determine how to improve this part
of the API. I'm seeing smart people not get this right, so I believe there is
a genuine problem here that needs to be fixed by clearer semantics in
the API.
