I know that your question has already been answered well by Airy and Urs,
but I will just add that there's some pretty simple example code that you
may want to look at with RMS Buddy:
http://destroyfx.org/extras/
It uses properties and *parameter* notifications (there's a reason for
using a parameter for notifications, but explained in the comments) to
share dynamics analysis data with the GUI, and also a property and
property notification to update the GUI about when the number of channels
changes.
