No, there is no way to provide a custom name. As you surmised, the
value used to determine the string is the device transport type. The
translation from the integer to the string is performed by the Prefs
Panel itself. There is no API for it. The Prefs Panel also doesn't go
strictly by the value of the transport type. It also will list the data
source name for the items that correspond to a data source on a given
device.

port name. Is there a way to provide a custom name here, rather than
the generic "PCI Card"? It seems to be tied to the value that you
